3 iPhone settings that stop your iMessages from quietly turning into plain texts
Blue bubbles don't prove a chat is encrypted. The Info pane does.
๐ HEY, IT'S RAJA
A blue bubble doesn't mean a chat is encrypted. A conversation can drop from iMessage to RCS, MMS or plain SMS partway through, and Messages only marks it with a small gray note you scroll straight past.
Glenn Fleishman dug into this for Six Colors this month, and Michael Tsai's readers have been adding their own cases since. This week's find is where your iPhone shows a chat's real status, and the 3 switches that stop the drop.
๐ The find: your chat's real encryption status
It lives in the Info pane, not in the colour of the bubbles.
Check any chat in 5 seconds
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Tap the profile picture at the top to open the Info pane.
- Read the small gray text at the bottom. It tells you whether the chat is end-to-end encrypted right now.
That line always shows the current state. Bubble colours can change mid-conversation without any warning, so they aren't proof of anything.
The 5 ways a text can travel
From safest to least safe: iMessage, encrypted RCS, RCS, MMS and SMS. Only the first 2 are end-to-end encrypted.
Group chats are where it catches people. Add one person who isn't on iMessage, and the whole group drops to RCS for everyone in it.
The 3 switches that stop the drop
Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and turn off these 3:
- Retry as Text Message stops your iPhone falling back to SMS when iMessage doesn't go through.
- RCS Messaging stops the fallback to RCS. There's no way to block only the unencrypted kind, so this turns off all RCS.
- MMS Messaging blocks MMS, which Messages can use even when it isn't retrying as SMS.
The trade-off is real. With all 3 off, a message that can't go as iMessage simply fails to send, and other people can still text you by SMS. The switches only exist on iPhone, so you can't set them from an iPad or Mac.
๐ก One more gap: with Messages in iCloud turned on, the key that unlocks your messages is stored in your iCloud backups. Advanced Data Protection closes it. That isn't available in the UK, so the option there is backing up your iPhone to a Mac instead of iCloud.
๐ Where: Settings > Apps > Messages
โฑ๏ธ Time: about 2 minutes
๐ฑ Works on: iPhone only
Open the Info pane on your 3 most important chats tonight. It takes 15 seconds, and you'll know exactly which ones are private.
See you Wednesday.
