FileTypeGuard
Stops other apps from changing your default apps
MacFree, open source
The verdict
FileTypeGuard locks each file type to the app you chose and puts it back within seconds when another app takes it over, then tells you with a notification. Install a new video player or PDF tool and your videos and PDFs keep opening where they did before. A log records every change and restore, so you can see which app keeps grabbing your files.
Get it if
You install a lot of apps and keep having to reset which app opens your PDFs or videos.
Skip it if
You rarely install new apps, and the Open With setting in Finder's Get Info window fixes the odd default.
What it helps you do
- Keep PDFs opening in Preview after new installs
- Undo default app changes within seconds
- See which app keeps changing your defaults
- Set a default app for any file extension
