The differences you'll notice every day
Both are free, both trim silence and both run on iPhone, iPad, Mac and CarPlay. The choice comes down to 2 things: how much you care about squeezing time out of talk shows, and whether every device you own is an Apple one.
| Day to day | ||
|---|---|---|
| Silence trimming | Smart Speed shortens pauses without speeding up voices. It's the feature Overcast is known for. | Trim Silence, with 3 levels: Mild, Medium and Mad Max. Free on iPhone and Android, not in the Mac, Windows or web apps. |
| Volume | Voice Boost evens out quiet and loud shows, so you aren't riding the volume in the car. | Volume Boost, on iPhone and Android only. |
| Apple Watch | Plays on the Watch on its own, including streaming over cellular, with no phone nearby. | The Watch app is part of Plus, at $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year. |
| Transcripts | Added in April 2026. They scroll with the episode, and tapping a line jumps to it. | Generated transcripts since April 2025, for Plus and Patron members. |
| Where it runs | Apple only: iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Apple Watch, CarPlay, plus a web player. | iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Windows and the web, with CarPlay, Android Auto, Chromecast and Sonos. |
| Sync | Through iCloud. No account to create. | Through a free Pocket Casts account, which carries your queue and progress to every platform. |
| Paying | Free with small ads for other podcasts. Premium hides them; the App Store lists $19.99 and $29.99 options. | Free covers playback. Plus adds the Watch app, folders, bookmarks, transcripts and 20 GB of storage for your own files. |

Questions people ask
Is Overcast better than Pocket Casts?
For an iPhone-only listener who wants talk shows done faster, yes: Smart Speed and the free standalone Watch app are hard to beat. If you also listen on Android, Windows or in a browser, Pocket Casts is the better pick because 1 queue follows you everywhere.
Does Pocket Casts have Smart Speed?
It has its own version called Trim Silence, with 3 strength levels. It works on iPhone and Android but not in the Mac, Windows or web apps.
Is Pocket Casts free?
Yes. Playback, smart playlists, Trim Silence, Volume Boost and sync are free. Plus, at $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, adds the Apple Watch app, folders, bookmarks and transcripts.
Can I move my podcasts from Overcast to Pocket Casts?
Yes. Export your subscriptions as an OPML file from Overcast and import it into Pocket Casts. It works the other way too.

Our verdicts
Overcast
One developer, Marco Arment, writes and runs Overcast on his own, and it still does something Apple Podcasts doesn't: Smart Speed trims the silences in talk shows without speeding up voices. Voice Boost evens out quiet and loud shows, which helps a lot in the car. Most features are free with small ads for other podcasts, and hiding them takes a yearly Premium subscription.
Pocket Casts
Free covers nearly everything here, including smart playlists, silence trimming, voice boost and sync across iPhone, Mac, the web and Android. That cross-platform sync is the reason to pick it over Apple Podcasts, especially if you also listen on an Android phone or a Windows PC through the web app. The Apple Watch app is part of Plus at $3.99 a month, along with folders and bookmarks, so Watch listeners have to pay.
