The picks, in order

  1. 1BetterTouchTool app icon

    BetterTouchTool

    $15 onceOur pick

Pick it if you want a gesture or spare mouse button to snap windows, paste snippets or run scripts.

macOS gives you a fixed set of trackpad gestures and window snapping to halves, while BetterTouchTool maps almost any gesture, mouse button or key to an action and chains actions into small automations. It also has a launcher with clipboard history and AI agents that work with OpenAI, Anthropic or local models. It costs $15 with 2 years of updates or $25 for life, and building a setup takes real time.

  2. 2Mac Mouse Fix app icon

    Mac Mouse Fix

    $2.99 once

Pick this if you use a gaming or budget mouse with side buttons and miss trackpad gestures.

Plug a regular mouse into a Mac and you lose every trackpad gesture and smooth scrolling. Mac Mouse Fix brings them back: hold a side button and drag to switch Spaces or open Mission Control, and reverse scrolling for the mouse alone. It costs $2.99 after a 30-day trial that only counts days you use it, while Mos is the free option if smooth scrolling is all you miss.

  3. 3LinearMouse app icon

    LinearMouse

    Free, open sourceBest free

Pick it if your plugged-in mouse scrolls the wrong way or the pointer speed feels off, and you want a free fix.

Turn off pointer acceleration, reverse scrolling on the mouse while the trackpad stays natural, and remap extra buttons to shortcuts or Mission Control, with separate settings per device, app or display. LinearMouse does all of it free and open source, without installing your mouse maker's own software. Mac Mouse Fix, at $2.99 once, is the better pick if what you miss is trackpad-style gestures on a mouse.

  4. 4Mos app icon

    Mos

    Free

Pick this if all you want is smooth, trackpad-like scrolling from your mouse wheel for free.

If you moved from a trackpad to a regular mouse and hate how the wheel jumps in steps, Mos makes it scroll smoothly the way a trackpad does. It also reverses the mouse's direction without touching the trackpad, tunes the feel per app and maps extra buttons to Mission Control or Spaces, all free from the menu bar. Mac Mouse Fix adds trackpad-style gestures for $2.99, but Mos covers smooth scrolling at no cost.

  5. 5Swish app icon

    Swish

    $16 once

Pick it if you use a trackpad and want swipes and pinches to arrange your windows.

Recent macOS tiles windows when you drag them to the screen edges, but Swish does it with a swipe on the title bar, snapping to halves, thirds or quarters. Pinch to close, pinch out for full screen and swipe down to minimize, with 30 gestures across windows, the Dock and the menu bar. It needs a trackpad or Magic Mouse and costs $16 once, while Rectangle does keyboard snapping free.

  6. 6Homerow app icon

    Homerow

    $49.99 once

Pick this if you'd rather never touch the mouse and click buttons by typing a couple of letters.

Command-Tab gets you to an app from the keyboard, but clicking a button inside it still means reaching for the trackpad, and Homerow fixes that by putting letter labels on every button, link and menu so you type to click. It also scrolls by keyboard, finds buttons by name and works in Safari, Chrome, Slack, Finder and most other apps. At $49.99 it is pricey, so let the free trial show whether the habit sticks.
