Two iPhone annoyances that are actually just settings
The Preview app hijacking your taps, and the 10 seconds Apple gives you to unsend an email

๐ HEY, IT'S RAJA
Your iPhone does something annoying. You assume that is just how it works. It usually is not.
That sentence has become a bit of an obsession for me this year, because almost every complaint I hear about stock iOS apps turns out to have a fix that already shipped on the phone. Apple buried it two menus deep, gave it a name that does not describe what it does, or left it switched off.
Two of those today. Both take under a minute.
๐ Fix one: stop Preview hijacking every tap
iOS 26 gave the iPhone a Preview app, and it quietly became the answer to questions you were not asking.
The problem
You tap a PDF in Files, or an attachment in Mail, or a document someone sent you in Messages, and Preview opens instead of the app you expected. It is not broken, and you have not misconfigured anything. Preview simply installed itself as the default handler for a category of files that used to open elsewhere, and nobody told you.
The result is a small tax on every document you touch. One extra app in your recents, one extra back-swipe, one moment of "wait, why am I here."
The fix
- Long-press any PDF in the Files app.
- Tap Open With, then scroll to the very bottom.
- Select Preview with Quick Look.
- Repeat once for JPG and once for PNG.
The catch
Doing this does not delete Preview or stop you using it deliberately. It stops Preview claiming files by default. If you actually like Preview for markup, you can still open things in it on purpose, which is the way it should have shipped.
๐ Fix two: give yourself 30 seconds to unsend an email
Apple gives you 10 by default. That is not enough time to notice you attached the wrong file.
The problem
Mail has an Undo Send window, and almost everyone has met it accidentally: you hit send, a small Undo Send button appears at the bottom of the screen, and by the time your brain catches up with the mistake, it has vanished. Ten seconds is roughly the time it takes to realize you forgot the attachment, and not nearly enough time to do anything about it.
The fix
Settings โ Apps โ Mail โ Undo Send Delay
- Open Settings and scroll to Apps.
- Tap Mail.
- Tap Undo Send Delay and choose 30 seconds.
The catch
This one has a real trade-off, and it's why Apple defaults to 10. Your email does not actually leave until the window expires, so at 30 seconds every message you send sits on your phone for half a minute first. If you are the kind of person who sends something and then tells someone in the next room to check their inbox, you will notice. For everyone else, half a minute of insurance is a bargain.
๐ก Pro tip: the Undo Send button only appears while the Mail app is open and on screen. Send an email and immediately swipe away to the Home Screen, and you have given up your own safety net.
Two toggles, two minutes. Reply and tell me which iPhone annoyance you have been putting up with, and I will see you Wednesday.
